Can I pay with Visa gift card?

A Visa gift card is often declined for online purchases because it lacks the name and billing address verification required, a key feature of credit and debit cards. Many prepaid cards also fail due to insufficient funds, as they don't have built-in overdraft protection.
- Add the prepaid Visa to a digital wallet like PayPal, Google Pay, or Apple Pay. This can sometimes bypass the billing address check.
- Register the card with your billing address. Look for the issuing bank's website or phone number on the back of the card. Go online to register the card and link your personal billing address to it.
- Check the exact balance. Verify the remaining balance on the card before making a purchase. If the order total is higher, the transaction may be declined.
- Billing address mismatch: A standard prepaid Visa card is not issued to a specific person or address, and most BigCommerce stores have address verification systems (AVS) enabled for fraud protection. If the billing address you enter does not match one registered with the card, the transaction will be declined.
- Unregistered card: The card may not be active yet. You may need to register it with your name and address on the gift card company's website or by calling the number on the card. This will tie your address to the card and allow it to pass AVS checks.
- Insufficient funds: Many prepaid cards will decline the transaction if the purchase total is even slightly higher than the available balance, including any sales tax. You may need to use a second payment method to cover the difference or purchase a store-specific gift certificate for the exact amount.
- Pre-authorization holds: Some vendors, like restaurants, can place a pre-authorization hold for up to 20% more than the purchase price to cover a potential tip. If this hold exceeds the card's balance, the transaction will be declined, even if the total without the tip is within the limit.
- Fraud protection: Some online retailers have security measures that flag anonymous payment methods like gift cards and automatically decline them to prevent fraud.
